My Subway experience [esp] scroll down for English version>>

distintas generaciones intercambiaban info de todo tipo : fanzines do it

My Subway experience [eng]

My relationship with the subway began back when people relating to hip-hop culture in Barcelona used to meet in the old Universitá train station in the 1 line. Gathering were brakers, skaters and graffiti bombers. We lent each other our street stories and we learned from the oldest, who at the time (1991) would be between 18 or 20 years old, what today is known as the "old school"!

bcn 1992 / bcn 2003

We used to do metring [from the word metro which in Spanish means subway]; that was traveling on the back of the train where there was a tiny platform for our feet and bars to cling to. We traveled that way for a couple of stations while tagging the driver's cabin.

The meetings were on Sunday in the afternoon and there there were a lot of people of different ages, neighborhoods and realities. It was something spontaneous although for quite a while different genarations had been meeting to share info of all sorts: DIY zines, party flyers, new spots to paint... it was where all the people of the "movement", underground at the time, could meet. It was an underground movement that made meetings in the underground. Very simbolic.

The meetings in Universitá lasted, if I'm right, until 1993-1994 as people started to follow their own paths and many changed to other "movements" like raving, military service or family matters. The magic of the first years was that we all were super young and flipped out with everything, all was new to us and we found people that used to make the same stuff as us even though they were from other neighborhood or city. It got us together like a big family.

I remember a lot of policemen pulling young people against the walls to frisk for markers. We took advantage of protests that started in the same Universitá Square to get together and bomb the center of the city, trash cans falling down stairs in the subway stations, some kids form my neighborhood used to spray the 'machacas' [subway private guards] faces with the fire extinguishers, others got their batons and hit them with them, anyway, everything was very savage!.

It's been some years since then, but when you grow up with this kind of experiences it is normal that the subway remains interesting wherever you are, to every one that once was an underground bomber.
